Albany Kayak Festival Makes a Splash in Inaugural Year

The inaugural Albany Kayak Festival was a resounding success, bringing paddlers, families and the local community together for a memorable weekend on the stunning Kalgan River.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Kalgan River, participants gathered at the Albany Rowing Club and nearby Kalgan River Caravan Park for a weekend filled with kayaking and community connection. Visitors from across Western Australia joined local paddlers for a range of activities designed to suit all ages and skill levels.

The festival’s Come and Try sessions attracted strong interest from local residents, with many Albany families and young people taking to the water for the first time. Canoe polo games proved particularly popular, while opportunities to paddle in K4 boats had participants eagerly lining up for their turn.

Saturday’s program featured a series of sprint races, providing paddlers with the opportunity to test their skills in the 1000m, 500m and 200m. An exhibition 100m showcased some of Western Australia’s top paddling talent, with Sam Meyers taking line honours.

Returning to the Kalgan River Caravan Park on Saturday evening, a community barbecue brought together participants, volunteers and families to connect and celebrate the day’s activities.

Sunday’s marathon events saw paddlers tackling courses ranging from 3km to 12km along the winding Kalgan River. Competitors enjoyed spectacular scenery throughout the course, passing forested riverbanks, vineyards and farmland..

Beyond the competition, the festival reinforced Albany’s reputation as one of Western Australia’s premier outdoor recreation destinations. Visitors praised both the natural setting and the generosity of local volunteers, clubs and community members who helped make the event possible.

With stunning waterways, a vibrant paddling community and a relaxed atmosphere, the inaugural Albany Kayak Festival is likely to become a staple on the annual calendar. These events are not possible without the generous support of our volunteers. Special mentions must go to Doug Hodson, Michelle Major and Garth Civil for leading the planning and delivery of the event.

Paddle WA would like to gratefully acknowledge the support of the WA Government for our regional events and initiatives. We look forward to continuing to build, develop and grow our regional presence to increase youth participation, expand pathways and strengthen regional partnerships and community engagement.
