Flatwater Guide Course

For teachers with practical experience in guiding school trips, conducting paddling activities or similar.

A two-day instruction and assessment course for the Paddle Australia (PA) Flatwater Guide Award. The course covers guiding skills, refining paddling techniques, rescues, trip planning, group management and trip Leadership.

$365 + GST *

* Does not include Paddle Australia 3-year registration fee.

Pre-requisite requirements

  • Flatwater (FW) paddling skills as explained in the FW Skills Award
  • 5 or more FW trips + 3 paddling activities as assistant, plus
  • 3 paddling activities as lead guide in the previous 3 years

Course content

This is not a skills development course.

Candidates are expected have completed a Paddle WA skills Session or to have adequate paddling skills that just need tweaking.

This course will cover topics such as:

  • paddling guiding skills
  • refining paddling technique
  • rescues
  • minimal impact practice
  • interpreting weather and navigation
  • trip intentions, float plans and risk management
  • group management

The course is conducted in playboats or canoes.
