Western Australian sprint kayaker Sam McTigue began kayaking through Champion Lakes and Bayswater clubs, representing Australia, and training under the elite WAIS high‑performance program
Sam McTigue began his kayaking journey at just 13 years old, starting out at Champion Lakes through the Talent Identification (TID) sprint kayak program. It was here that he was introduced to the fundamentals of competitive paddling and quickly developed a passion for the sport.
Around two years later, Sam and his squad relocated to Bayswater, where he continued to train and race throughout the remainder of his sprint paddling career. The move marked an important stage in his development, with Bayswater becoming the training base where he refined his technique, built his strength, and grew as an athlete.
In 2014, after earning selection onto his second Australian team, Sam joined the WAIS program. This milestone signified a major step forward in his high‑performance pathway, providing access to elite coaching, structured training, and a professional environment that helped elevate his performance on both the national and international stage.
Sam remained part of the WAIS program for the next four years before choosing to step away from high‑level competition. His time within the system left a lasting impact, shaping not only his sporting career but also the discipline and resilience he carries with him beyond paddling.
