Moving Water Endorsement and Rescue 1 or 2 from a Kayak

Paddling qualification courses with Paddle WA

This course will cover topics such as

  • self and buddy rescue
  • defensive and aggressive swimming and shallow water crossing
  • rescue equipment
  • hydrology
  • rope work and retrieving gear
  • swimming techniques for rescuing
  • bow rescue and X rescue
  • tows for rescue – short, contact, reach and quick release
  • throw bag use including for multiple swimmers
  • group management rescue, risk management and communication

THE COURSE

This is a paddling skills development course with the option of assessment for those who meet the requirements and, assessment at a later date, for those who need to consolidate further.
It is a practical course. You complete an online quiz for the rescue qualification but all other assessment is practical
Each day will include practical sessions at the location followed by a short river trip:
Day 1 for the Moving Water Endorsement – Rescue and skills morning and after lunch a river run from bottom of Bells to Amiens. 6.5km paddle on grade 1 flowing water through tea trees and channels.
Day 2 for Rescue Quals – Mechanical advantage rescue etc in the morning followed by a river run from Walyunga to Bells Rapids in playboats (Dependent on water levels). This run will focus on techniques for guiding and rescue through grade 2 rapids. 4.5km paddle on flowing water and grade 2 rapids. You can use a Paddle WA playboat if you don’t have one.

prerequisites

Moving Water Endorsement – Flatwater Guide or Instructor in the Craft you guide in (ie Canoe or Kayak or SOT)

WHAT TO BRING

Food and drink for each day, include snacks and ample water or fluids for the trips.

Moving Water Endorsement
Please bring the craft you will be using for the river trip. It should be the craft that you will be using to guide your students. Bring your paddling kit including any rescue equipment you use.

Rescue 1 and Rescue 2 from a Kayak
We will have Paddle Academy play boats (ie kayaks) that you can use but you can bring your own kayak that you use on white water if you like. Bring your paddling kit (should include an instructor lifejacket with quick release) and any rescue equipment.

We do have access to a small number of instructor lifejackets if you need to borrow some kit. We also have a range of rescue equipment for participants to use.
