Paddling qualification courses with Paddle WA
MOVING WATER ENDORSEMENT
For teachers guiding groups of novices on moving water that has
hazards such as strainers and a degree of risk. the endoresement is attached to a current Flatwater Guide or Instructor qualification in canoe or kayak or SOT.
Ed Department Requirements for white water up to and including Grade 2 rapids
This course will cover topics such as
- MW River Guiding
- self and buddy rescue in MW
- defensive and aggressive swimming and
shallow water crossing - MW rescue equipment and technique
- hydrology
- Identify MW hazards
- throw bag use including for multiple
swimmers - MW paddling skills
- Group Briefing for MW
- group management, risk management
and communication

THE COURSE
This is a skills development course with the option of assessment for those who meet the requirements and, assessment at a later date, for those who need to consolidate further.
It is a practical course plus the completion of an online quiz.
The day will include a river trip from Yarrigal to Baden.
Car shuffle will be organised at the meet location in the morning. Some vehicles will be driven to the start and some will stay at Baden Powell.
prerequisites
Flatwater Guide or Instructor in the Craft you guide in (ie Canoe or Kayak or SOT). For example if your students use canoes to undertake a trip but you use a kayak to guide them, then you need Moving Water Endorsement – Kayak.
In the previous 3 years, 4 moving water activities a minimum of 3 hours duration each. Two of the activities as a lead guide.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring the craft you will be using for the river trip. It should be the craft that you will be using to guide your students. Bring your paddling kit including any rescue equipment you use. Your kit should include a lifejacket with quick release as part of your towing set up.
Need gear? Talk to us. We do have access to a small number of instructor lifejackets if you need to borrow some kit. We also have a range of rescue equipment and boats for participants to use.
Food and drink for each day, include snacks and ample water or fluids for the trips.
Warm paddling gear, you will be demonstrating swimming in the river.
